Preloading is a technique designed to enhance web performance by loading resources that users may need in advance to speed up page loading times.#

However, research by DebugBear indicates that preloading can sometimes slow down webpage loading speeds. Theoretically, the priority of preload requests is set to the lowest, meaning they do not compete for bandwidth with resources required by the current page, but actual tests have found that preload requests often initiate early in the page load, competing for bandwidth with the main content, resulting in delays in loading critical resources.

Experiments show that preloaded JavaScript files typically finish loading earlier than main content images, which contradicts the original design intent of preloading. Additionally, because preloaded files come from the same domain as the HTML document, while images may require new server connections, preloading has a certain advantage in actual loading speed.

DebugBear found through experiments that disabling preloading improved the 75th percentile Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) score of the page by 100 milliseconds, but in the 90th and 95th percentile test results, the performance difference between preloaded and non-preloaded was minimal. When investigating websites that use preloading technology, DebugBear found it difficult to find sites that only preloaded during network idle times; many websites began their preload requests in less than a second after the page opened, which contradicts the "low priority" design of preloading.

To avoid preloading slowing down the website, it is recommended not to add preload hints in the initial page HTML or HTTP headers, but instead to dynamically insert preload tags via JavaScript after the page has finished loading. Although preloaded resources often load early in the page load, potentially competing for bandwidth with the main content, due to the complexity of modern network environments, this competition usually has a negligible impact on page speed. Firefox performs better with preloading, waiting until the page has finished loading before starting preload requests.

Amazon plans to invest over $100 billion by 2025, a figure higher than any other company. It did not engage in stock buybacks or dividend distributions in fiscal year 2024, instead reinvesting all funds to drive innovation and future growth.#

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy believes AI is the biggest opportunity in decades, expecting that nearly all existing applications will be reinvented with built-in AI, and that AI inference will become a core building block like computing, storage, and databases.

In the fourth quarter of 2024, Amazon's revenue grew 10% year-over-year to $188 billion, exceeding expectations by $600 million. Among them, AWS revenue grew 19% year-over-year, maintaining this growth rate for the third consecutive quarter, but supply chain and power constraints are slowing potential growth, and management expects these constraints to ease in the second half of 2025. Advertising revenue grew 18% year-over-year to $17.3 billion, gaining market share from Google Search and YouTube. In e-commerce, although consumers are shopping more cautiously, leading to lower average selling prices, the number of goods sold has increased, with online store revenue growing 8% year-over-year and third-party seller service revenue growing 9%.

Amazon's revenue expectation for the first quarter of 2025 is between $153 billion and $155.5 billion, below the market expectation of $158 billion, mainly affected by a $2.1 billion foreign exchange headwind and a $1.5 billion impact from leap year effects. Nevertheless, Amazon's long-term strategy on AI remains a focus, with Andy Jassy emphasizing that custom silicon chips (like Trainium 2 and future iterations) are its competitive advantage, capable of lowering costs and improving AI efficiency.

In the AI technology stack, AWS holds a 30% market share in the cloud infrastructure market, higher than Microsoft's Azure at 21% and Google's Cloud at 12%. AWS's operating profit margin increased to 37%, with 2 percentage points attributed to accounting adjustments for extended server lifetimes. AWS has laid out plans across the three layers of the AI technology stack—Infrastructure, Model, and Application layers.

At the infrastructure layer, Amazon has increased its investment in AI infrastructure, launching the Trainium 2 chip, which offers 30% to 40% better price-performance than comparable GPU instances. Amazon also maintains deep collaboration with Nvidia while reducing AI costs through its internal silicon chip strategy. Additionally, Amazon has partnered with Anthropic to build a large AI cluster called Project Rainier, which includes hundreds of thousands of Trainium 2 chips, with Trainium 3 also in development, expected to launch a preview by the end of 2025.

At the model layer, Bedrock is Amazon's LLM as a service platform, providing customers with various foundational models from third-party vendors and Amazon itself. SageMaker AI is another successful service in this field. Amazon has also launched its own model family, Nova, which has lower latency and costs 75% less than other models in Bedrock, attracting well-known clients such as Palantir, Deloitte, and SAP. Bedrock has also introduced cost-saving features to reduce the costs of AI adoption.

At the application layer, Amazon is building AI-driven applications to enhance business productivity and user engagement. For example, Amazon Q is a generative AI assistant similar to GitHub Copilot for software development; Rufus is an AI-driven shopping assistant to enhance product discovery and customer engagement; Alexa is also undergoing redevelopment based on foundational models to enable more complex AI-driven interactions.

Moreover, the advertising business has become a key growth area for Amazon. Sponsored product ads have performed well, and with the launch of new streaming services like Prime Video ads, advertising revenue continues to grow. Prime Video transitioned to an ad-supported model in the first quarter of 2024, unless users pay $2.99 per month for an ad-free option. According to Nielsen data, Prime Video accounted for 4.0% of U.S. TV viewing time in December 2024, nearly half of Netflix's market share in the U.S. While user engagement on Prime Video is lower than on Netflix, its large user base still positions it significantly in the streaming space. Amazon's multi-purpose membership system effectively reduces user churn, providing precise user data for its advertising business, enabling high-return CTV advertising.

In the e-commerce sector, Amazon faces competition from Shein and Temu. The de minimis tax exemption in U.S. tariff policy allows imported goods valued under $800 to be exempt from tariffs, benefiting Chinese e-commerce giants like Shein and Temu. In 2023, the U.S. imported $55 billion worth of goods under this provision, most of which came from China. Although the Trump administration briefly eliminated this exemption, it was later restored, causing confusion for e-commerce retailers. Shein and Temu are working to diversify, but the impact remains uncertain. Amazon is launching Amazon Haul in the fall of 2024 to address the challenges posed by Shein and Temu, offering products priced under $20, but with longer delivery times. If the de minimis tax exemption is removed, Amazon's logistics advantages will help it surpass competitors in fulfillment and reliability.

Developers' experiences and views on Claude Code, an AI programming tool developed by Anthropic, have sparked in-depth discussions about the role of AI in software development.#

Many developers report that Claude Code excels at handling simple yet tedious tasks, such as generating boilerplate code, performing small-scale code refactoring, or writing command scripts. These tasks typically require a certain amount of time, but can be completed quickly by AI. For example, one developer mentioned that using Claude Code to complete a simple feature extension took only 3 minutes, while manual coding might take longer. However, for complex tasks, Claude Code's performance is not ideal. Some developers pointed out that AI-generated code is often overly complex and can introduce more issues when modified, requiring significant human intervention to correct.

Despite AI's strong performance in certain areas, developers generally believe it cannot fully replace human programmers. AI is highly efficient at handling simple tasks, but its capabilities are clearly lacking when faced with complex logic, architectural design, or scenarios requiring a deep understanding of business requirements. Many developers noted that AI lacks a deep understanding of the logic behind the code, often executing tasks based only on surface-level instructions, rather than optimizing from an overall architecture and business needs perspective. Additionally, AI may introduce errors or unreasonable implementations when generating code, requiring developers to spend extra time debugging and correcting.

Some developers have attempted to integrate AI into their development processes, finding it can serve as an auxiliary tool to help quickly generate initial code or provide ideas. However, some developers worry that over-reliance on AI may lead to a degradation of their own programming skills. For instance, one developer mentioned that while code written with AI can complete tasks quickly, their understanding of it is limited, making subsequent maintenance and optimization difficult. Furthermore, AI outputs often require rigorous review and testing to ensure they meet actual needs.

Cost issues also became a focal point in discussions. Some developers pointed out that using AI tools like Claude Code incurs high costs, especially when handling complex tasks, where costs can escalate rapidly. For example, one developer mentioned that using Claude Code for a simple feature extension cost $0.73, while using other tools (like Aider) only cost $0.07. This indicates that while AI tools can improve efficiency in certain cases, their costs need to be carefully weighed.

Despite the current limitations of AI in software development, developers generally believe it has enormous potential. With technological advancements, AI is expected to take on more complex tasks in the future and further improve development efficiency. However, some developers worry that the rapid development of AI may lead to the disappearance of some development positions, especially those focused on writing simple code. Nonetheless, most developers believe that AI is more likely to become an assistant to developers rather than a replacement.

Microsoft's official blog announced significant progress in TypeScript performance improvements, aiming for a 10x performance boost.#

The TypeScript team is developing a native version of the TypeScript compiler and tools, which will significantly accelerate editor startup speed, reduce most build times, and greatly decrease memory usage.

In terms of performance improvements, the native implementation has already been able to load many popular TypeScript projects, including the TypeScript compiler itself. For example, testing the VS Code codebase, the current version of tsc takes 77.8 seconds, while the native version only takes 7.5 seconds, a speed increase of 10.4 times; the Playwright codebase was reduced from 11.1 seconds to 1.1 seconds, a speed increase of 10.1 times; the TypeORM codebase was reduced from 17.5 seconds to 1.3 seconds, a speed increase of 13.5 times. This performance improvement benefits not only large projects but also small ones.

In terms of editor performance, the native language service will greatly enhance the speed of loading large projects in the editor. For VS Code, loading the entire project currently takes 9.6 seconds, while the native language service only takes 1.2 seconds, reducing project loading time by 8 times. Additionally, memory usage has also been reduced by about half, with further optimization potential in the future.

Regarding version planning, TypeScript 5.8 has been released, and 5.9 is on the way. JavaScript-based codebases will continue to evolve into the 6.x series, with TypeScript 6.0 introducing some deprecations and breaking changes to align with the native codebase. Once the native codebase achieves sufficient consistency with the current TypeScript, it will be released as TypeScript 7.0. The team will regularly release stability and feature milestones during the development process.

Microsoft also plans to introduce new compiler APIs and language server protocols (LSP) in the native version to better align with other languages. The team has made relevant code available on GitHub and published a FAQ. Additionally, Microsoft will hold a Q&A event on March 13 in the TypeScript community Discord, where developers can participate in discussions.

This performance improvement will bring significant changes to TypeScript and JavaScript development, enabling instant, comprehensive error lists and supporting more advanced refactoring and deep code analysis, providing stronger support for future AI tools.

OpenAI announced a series of new tools to help developers and businesses build practical and reliable intelligent agents.#

These tools include the Responses API, built-in tools (such as web search, file search, and computer usage), Agents SDK, and integrated observability tools for tracking and inspecting the execution of intelligent agent workflows. These new tools simplify the core logic, orchestration, and interaction of intelligent agents, making it easier for developers to start building intelligent agents.

The Responses API is a new API primitive launched by OpenAI for building intelligent agents, combining the simplicity of the Chat Completions API with the tool usage capabilities of the Assistants API. This API supports various built-in tools, such as web search, file search, and computer usage, and provides a unified project-based interface design, simpler polymorphism, intuitive streaming events, and SDK helper tools like response.output_text, making it easy for developers to obtain the model's text output. The Responses API aims to provide developers with a more flexible foundation to integrate OpenAI models and built-in tools into applications without the need for complex integration of multiple APIs or external vendors. This API is now open to all developers at no additional charge, with token and tool costs billed at standard rates according to OpenAI's pricing page.

For existing APIs, the Chat Completions API remains one of OpenAI's most popular APIs, and OpenAI will continue to provide new models and feature support for it. However, the Responses API is a superset of Chat Completions, offering the same performance, so it is recommended to prioritize the Responses API for new integration projects. The Assistants API has been improved based on developer feedback, and its functionality will gradually align completely with the Responses API, including support for objects like Assistant and Thread, as well as code interpreter tools. Once these improvements are completed, OpenAI plans to officially announce the deprecation of the Assistants API in mid-2026 and provide clear migration guidelines to help developers transition existing applications to the Responses API.

Regarding built-in tools, the web search tool allows developers to quickly obtain fast, up-to-date, and relevant answers from the web, providing clear citation sources. In the Responses API, the web search tool supports gpt-4o and gpt-4o-mini models and can be combined with other tools or function calls. For example, Hebbia uses the web search tool to help asset management firms, private equity and credit companies, and law firms quickly extract actionable insights from large public and private datasets. The file search tool allows developers to retrieve relevant information from a large number of documents, supporting various file types, query optimization, metadata filtering, and custom sorting, providing fast and accurate search results. Navan uses the file search tool in its AI-driven travel agency to quickly provide users with precise answers from knowledge base articles. The computer usage tool is based on OpenAI's Computer Usage Agent (CUA) model, capable of capturing mouse and keyboard actions generated by the model, directly converting these actions into executable commands for automating computer tasks. For example, Unify uses this tool to enable agents to access information that was previously unavailable through APIs, while Luminai uses this tool to automate complex operational workflows for large enterprise legacy systems lacking API availability and standardized data.

The Agents SDK is an open-source toolkit designed to simplify the orchestration of multi-agent workflows. Compared to the Swarm SDK released last year, the Agents SDK includes several improvements, such as easily configurable LLMs, control transfer between intelligent agents, configurable security checks, and visual tracking of intelligent agent execution for debugging and optimizing performance. Coinbase quickly prototyped and deployed the AgentKit toolkit using the Agents SDK, enabling AI agents to seamlessly interact with crypto wallets and various on-chain activities. Box also quickly created intelligent agents using the SDK that leverage web search and the Agents SDK, allowing enterprises to search, query, and extract insights from Box's internal and public internet sources while complying with internal permissions and security policies.

How artificial intelligence (AI) is permanently changing the way innovation occurs.#

David Henkin discusses how artificial intelligence (AI) is permanently changing the way innovation occurs. AI is not just another tool in the innovation toolbox; it fundamentally rewrites the rules of innovation, transforming the entire process from ideation, development, to deployment of new ideas.

In terms of innovation, AI, and data, data is crucial for driving meaningful innovation, but many individuals and organizations struggle to effectively leverage vast amounts of data. AI can help people identify patterns and trends in data, driving smarter innovation. For example, some ports are testing AI technologies to address port disruptions and create digital versions of autonomous vessel services, leveraging machine learning and data collection to drive innovation and enhance future efficiency.

In terms of shifts in investment strategies, the rise of AI has prompted many companies and countries to shift their innovation focus towards artificial intelligence. Gulf oil-producing countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar are investing heavily in AI-related technology development, with the UAE being the first to launch a national AI strategy back in 2017 and becoming the first country to establish a ministry of artificial intelligence. From a technological perspective, AI is seen as the most important driver of innovation, with most future innovations and developments closely tied to AI.

In terms of rapid idea testing, AI can help people quickly prototype ideas. Arizona State University's AI Cloud Innovation Center reports that since its establishment, 80% of its projects have utilized AI-driven rapid prototyping, reducing project completion cycles from 6 to 8 months to 4 to 6 weeks. Additionally, predictive modeling through AI algorithms is reshaping innovation efforts by using data to forecast potential trends and outcomes of specific decisions, allowing for more effective testing of various possible solutions and driving better innovation outcomes.

In terms of creative generation, generative design plays an important role in the project ideation and drafting stages, providing a foundation for subsequent creativity and innovation. For example, Toyota Japan utilized generative AI to redesign seat frames, enhancing safety and comfort while meeting size and weight parameters; game manufacturer Capcom used AI to generate visual concepts and proposals for in-game objects, accelerating game development; an analysis by Harvard Business Review noted that generative AI can challenge expertise biases, inspiring designers to break through traditional perceptions of product form and function, thereby creating solutions that humans might not imagine through traditional methods.

From a long-term perspective, the most profound impact of AI on innovation lies in changing people's perceptions of possibilities. When it becomes possible to explore vast solution spaces quickly and at low cost, simulate and test ideas with unparalleled precision, and collaborate with AI systems that can amplify human creativity, the potential for innovation enters a new era. Those who thrive in this new era are not merely those who adopt AI tools but those who reimagine the entire approach to innovation. The future belongs to those who can effectively combine human creativity and judgment with AI's computational power and pattern recognition capabilities. The landscape of innovation has been permanently altered; the question is not whether to embrace AI-driven innovation, but how to quickly and effectively adapt to this new reality.

How AI Has Forever Altered Innovation

Fourth edition of the generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) consumer application ranking report. The report lists the top 50 AI-first web products (by monthly unique visitors) and the top 50 AI-first mobile applications (by monthly active users) based on Similarweb data.#

Growth of ChatGPT:

ChatGPT became the fastest-growing consumer application in history after its research preview launch in November 2022, reaching 100 million users in just two months. However, its global monthly visits stagnated between March 2023 and April 2024. Subsequently, as OpenAI continuously introduced more advanced models and features, ChatGPT's usage surged again. From 100 million weekly active users in November 2023, it grew to 200 million in August 2024, and reached 400 million by mid-February 2025. Key growth milestones align with product milestones, such as the launch of GPT-4o multimodal features in April-May 2024, advanced voice mode in July-August, and the o1 model series in September-October.

The rise of DeepSeek:

DeepSeek launched its public chatbot on January 20, 2025, quickly climbing to the second position in the global monthly ranking of all AI products within just 10 days. Its developer is the Chinese hedge fund High-Flyer, with 21% of January's traffic coming from China (where ChatGPT is banned). DeepSeek's growth rate has surpassed that of most general-purpose assistant LLMs, reaching 10 million users in just 20 days, exceeding ChatGPT's 40-day milestone. On mobile, DeepSeek launched on January 25 and climbed to the 14th position in monthly active user rankings within 5 days, further rising to 2nd place in February, capturing 15% of ChatGPT's mobile user base.

Breakthroughs in AI video:

AI video has been on the fringes of usability for the past 18 months, but significant progress has been made in the last six months. Three new companies, Hailuo (ranked 12th), Kling AI (ranked 17th), and Sora (ranked 23rd), have entered the web rankings for the first time. AI video model providers are beginning to differentiate themselves, each offering unique output styles and user interfaces, providing creators with more specialized options. For example, Sora is a multifunctional video generator, Hailuo excels in strong prompt adherence, while Kling offers additional features like camera motion control and lip-syncing.

The rise of development tools:

In the past six months, two categories of development tools have rapidly emerged. One category is developer-facing agent IDEs (like Cursor, ranked 41st), which serve as auxiliary tools for developers, featuring error checking, auto-completion, and code generation capabilities. The other category is text-to-web application platforms aimed at both technical and non-technical users (referred to as "vibecoders"), allowing users to generate usable websites or web applications simply by entering text prompts. Leaders in this field are experiencing rapid growth, such as Bolt (ranked 48th), which reached an annualized revenue of $20 million and 2 million registered users within the first two months of launch, while Lovable achieved an annualized revenue of $17 million within three months.

Discrepancies in mobile application usage and revenue:

The report notes that the popularity of mobile applications does not necessarily correlate with revenue. Many applications, despite having fewer users, achieve higher conversion rates and revenue per user through mobile subscriptions. Among the top 50 mobile applications, only 40% appear on both the monthly active user count and revenue lists. Some product categories are represented in both lists, but the companies on the lists differ. For example, in the video editing category, the top three in usage are VivaCut (ranked 15th), Filmora (ranked 19th), and Beat.ly (ranked 36th), while the top three in revenue are Splice, Captions, and Videoleap.

Proactivity is more powerful and rarer than intelligence.#

Andrej Karpathy argues that due to cultural overemphasis on intelligence, the influence of entertainment media, and obsession with IQ, there has long been a misunderstanding of this perspective. In reality, proactivity is more powerful and rarer than intelligence.

Proactivity, as a personality trait, refers to a person's ability to initiate action, make decisions, and take control of their own behavior and environment. It emphasizes taking initiative rather than reacting passively; highly proactive individuals do not let life dictate their actions but actively shape their lives. For example, they set goals and pursue them confidently, saying "I'll find a way to solve this" even when faced with difficulties, and actually doing so. In contrast, individuals with lower proactivity are more like passengers in their own lives, waiting for external forces (such as luck, others, or circumstances) to determine their next steps.

Proactivity is related to confidence, determination, and a sense of control over one's path; it differs from confidence or ambition in that it is a more introverted trait, believing in one's ability to act and being willing to put it into practice. Psychologists often associate it with the concept of "locus of control": highly proactive individuals tend to have an internal locus of control, believing they can shape their destinies; while less proactive individuals tend to have an external locus of control, feeling that life happens to them.

Mark Dent discusses the ineffectiveness of layoffs as a corporate management tool and their negative impact on companies and employees.#

Mark Dent points out that while layoffs are widely used, they actually undermine company culture, lower employee morale, damage company reputation, and can even negatively affect a company's long-term financial performance.

Mark reviews the historical background of layoffs, mentioning that in the mid-20th century, American companies generally adopted a capitalism model balancing profits with employee welfare, making large-scale layoffs rare. However, starting in the 1980s, with economic recessions, companies began to shift towards a shareholder value-oriented management model, making layoffs a common cost-cutting measure. Mark mentions "Neutron Jack" and "Chainsaw Al," two entrepreneurs known for large-scale layoffs, who achieved short-term profit growth through layoffs, a model emulated by many companies.

Mark analyzes the negative impacts of layoffs in detail. First, regarding company financial performance, studies show that layoff companies do not perform better than stable employment companies in the long term, and may even perform worse. Layoffs can lead to short-term and long-term issues, including stagnant or declining stock prices, decreased profitability within three years, and a doubled risk of bankruptcy. Second, layoffs are destructive to company culture, weakening employee trust in the company, leading to lower morale among remaining employees, accelerated burnout, and potentially causing more employees to voluntarily leave. Additionally, layoffs can damage a company's reputation among potential employees, reducing recruitment attractiveness. For employees, layoffs severely impact the psychological and economic conditions of those laid off, with studies showing an increase in suicide rates among laid-off employees.

Nevertheless, Mark also mentions alternatives to layoffs. For example, companies can reduce costs by shortening work hours or implementing unpaid leave, which can avoid the negative consequences of layoffs more effectively than direct layoffs. Additionally, companies can choose to delay investments and cut non-essential expenditures, as Southwest Airlines did after the 9/11 attacks by cutting new aircraft purchases and headquarters renovation budgets instead of laying off employees.

Mark also points out exceptions to layoffs. If layoffs are part of a broader strategic adjustment rather than purely cost-cutting, their effects may be better. In the tech industry, some companies have chosen layoffs during the pandemic due to over-hiring or facing potential crises, in which case layoffs may be seen as a preventive measure. However, overall, Mark believes that layoffs may be considered a necessary management tool in certain situations, but their long-term negative impacts usually outweigh short-term financial gains. Companies should use layoffs cautiously and consider other alternatives to better balance costs and employee welfare.
